More Time For You
5/10/10

As part of our ongoing series featuring past Torch Award recipients, the BBB’s
National Center for Character Ethics is pleased to shine a spotlight on More Time For You.

As the saying goes, the greatest gift you can give is the gift of time. In the case of 2005 Business Integrity/Torch Award recipient, More Time For You, it’s not just true…it’s business.

Together, Craig and Pam Sedoris own and operate More Time For You, a convenient housecleaning, lawn and handyman service provider to time-crunched consumers and businesses. They admit that there is a unique relationship when a spouse is also your business partner, and that it is much easier when you share the same ethical values.

For them, the Torch Award experience was an enlightening one. They started their business in 1999 and were nominated for the award in 2005 by the executive director of the National Association for the Remodeling Industry. For Craig and Pam, the honor of being nominated, and the process of preparing their Torch Award entry was a time of reflection.

According to Craig Sedoris, “It created a reason for us to reflect on where we had come from, and if we are being true now to our original mission. Our forward focus and vision became clearer.”

The business philosophy they highlighted in More Time For You’s submission was one in which they treat every individual, and react to every situation, from that individual’s vantage point. Then, they ask the simple question of how they would want to be treated under similar circumstances.

Sedoris elaborated, “We’ve always acted in a manner consistent with high ethical standards and our own personal ethics. That’s how we know we’re on the right path. Our judgment has never been compromised by financial motive. Our charitable work is altruistic and sincere. We don’t discriminate with our hiring and we’ve never endangered our employees. We’re proud of our past and strive daily to improve.”

While humble enough not to be disappointed if they didn’t receive the award, being selected by their peers brought a feeling of personal and professional satisfaction. It also served as confirmation that they were on the right path.

“Receiving the award somehow gets etched into your business DNA. It becomes a daily part of who you are and how you operate. It is a friendly reminder that reinforces that you’re doing alright.”

Customers’ trust and knowledge of More Time For You’s commitment to integrity and honesty is absolutely crucial in this service industry. The company holds the keys to over 70% of the customers it serves, creating an intimate and unique relationship with customers.

Sedoris recently came across what he describes as the “Five C’s of Trust”– character, competence, confidence, credibility and congruence. “Winning the Torch Award elevated all of those crucial elements, and that is where we continue to gain value.”

He recommends that business leaders surround themselves with people of integrity. He says that in doing so himself, their skills made the road to success much easier, as he had to rise to their level.

His advice? “Learn from them and try to emulate what they have achieved. And above all, focus on the Five C’s of Trust.”

More Time For You holds true to its business values, even amid the new economic climate. But it is adding to its list of services, seeking strategic partnerships with like-minded companies, and becoming even more engaged in the communities it serves. Sedoris was recently appointed to the board of the Powell Chamber of Commerce. And, More Time For You is a founding member of the Cleaning for a Reason Foundation, providing free cleaning for women undergoing treatment for cancer.

He admits, though, that it is time for introspection on how they need to adapt to the new climate, much like they looked at themselves several years ago.

“We have specific customer goals and are defining the tactics we need to achieve them. We’re still committed to helping our customers find more time. And, we continue to market very hard to insure continued employment for our employees. We won’t lose sight of where we have been, how we got here and where we are headed.“

As a father, Sedoris hopes the Torch Award recognition will resonate with his son, Casey, who will be starting his college journey in the fall.
“He has always strived for and achieved excellence. While I don’t take much credit for his success, I am so proud to see so many attributes of integrity in him.”
