In an ongoing series featuring past Torch Award recipients, the BBB’s
Center for Character Ethics is pleased to shine a spotlight on J. S. Brown & Co.

Choosing a home remodeling company can be one of the toughest decisions you’ll ever make. More than just quality craftsmanship and superior design, you’re looking for a company you can trust to come into your home, often for weeks at a time, to work alongside your family, personal possessions, and your most valuable of assets—your home. In the end, your decision is not just about price or how quickly they can get the job done. It is about working with a company of the highest integrity.

J.S. Brown & Co., winner of the 2004 Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio’s Business Integrity (Torch) Award, has spent the last 30 years building a reputation for business ethics and integrity. And they have done so by focusing on not just the end result, but on the experience.

“We want every customer to feel it was a pleasure to have us in their home and that they could trust us with their family and property,” said Jeffery S. Brown, founder and president of J.S. Brown and Co. “Our top priority is complete customer satisfaction, and that begins with the remodeling experience.”

J.S. Brown & Co. is a full-service custom residential remodeling company and a licensed, bonded and insured general contractor. The company has been invited into hundreds of central Ohio homes over the past three decades, and its reputation for professionalism, integrity and customer service has made it one of the leading home remodelers in central Ohio with a strong, loyal following of satisfied homeowners.

On every job, Brown ensures that the same workers remain from start to finish, and they treat every client’s home, belongings and family with the utmost respect and courtesy. The company’s work has received numerous local and national awards for excellence in craftsmanship and business practices, but one award stands out among the rest.

“We have received more than 100 awards just since 2000, but we always list our BBB Torch Award first. It sits front and center for all to see the moment you walk through our doors,” Brown said. “Integrity, honesty and ethical behavior are very important to us. This award hasn’t changed anything about how we do business, but we do appreciate being recognized for who we are and what we have tried to do since the beginning.”

Jeffrey S. Brown founded the company in 1978 performing any and all kinds of remodeling as well as new home construction. In 1986, after some consideration and analyzing of self, the market, competition and his ideal customer, he decided to stop trying to be all things to all people and directed J.S. Brown & Co's efforts and structure toward fine home remodeling and homeowners who appreciate and desire quality and attention to details. He says that he realized most contractors were satisfied long before he was and that he believed that quality is remembered long after price is forgotten. In 1987, J.S. Brown & Co. moved to its current location and absorbed a custom cabinet shop in an effort to better meet the needs of their customers.

Brown was named Remodeler of the Year in 1996 and 1997 by the BIA of Central Ohio, one of the top 50 remodelers in the nation by Remodeling magazine in 1999 and has served as the chairman of the local BIA, Remodelers’ Council as well as Trustee. He is a published writer for several national trade publications and was a cover feature for Professional Remodeler magazine.

The company’s accolades include the BBB Torch Award for Business Ethics, multiple Showcase of Remodeled Homes awards including Best of Show, and the industry’s most prestigious award, The NARI Contactor of the Year (CotY) award.

When asked if he had any best practices to share with others for approaching business with an ethical enterprising frame of mind, Brown’s advice was simple. “A good name is to be more desired than great riches. Proverbs 22:1”
